Are you struggling with anxiety? As someone who has experienced it myself, I know how draining it can be. Whether your thoughts are racing and you can’t seem to quiet your mind, or your heart is thumping out of your chest for no particular reason, it can feel overwhelming, and at times, even frightening.
Let me reassure you, I know it doesn’t feel like it right now, but learning about these feelings and understanding why you feel this way can be the first step toward gaining control and bringing balance back into your life.
Learning small coping strategies, such as grounding techniques, learning how to slow things down, and understanding how to control your breathing, is a good place to start when trying to feel less overwhelmed. At first, practising these may feel strange or unfamiliar, but the more you practise and build them into your routine, the more effective they become. If you only try to use them when anxiety is already high, they can be much harder to rely on.
One simple grounding technique you can try is the 5-4-3-2-1 method. When you start to feel anxious, pause and gently bring your attention to your surroundings. Name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. This helps bring your mind out of racing thoughts and back into the present moment.
Another helpful technique is controlled breathing. Try breathing in slowly through your nose for a count of 4, holding for 4, and then breathing out slowly through your mouth for a count of 6. Repeating this for a few minutes can help calm your body and reduce the intensity of anxious feelings.
Anxiety can feel incredibly lonely. You might feel embarrassed or apprehensive about reaching out, but you do not have to be. There is no judgment in experiencing anxiety, and you are far from alone; so many people feel just like you and are finding ways to feel better.
You do not have to struggle in silence. If you feel stuck or frustrated and like you are not making progress, reaching out for support can make a real difference. You deserve to feel in control again and to get back to enjoying your life, and change is possible, even if it does not feel like it right now.
